Just more than a year after it began, three separate but related reconstruction projects in the 2-year-old city of Miami Gardens, FL, are progressing nicely toward completion. They represent the final phase of a comprehensive plan designed to improve traffic flow and safety along Miami Gardens Drive. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) launched the projects in February 2004. Debris toppled onto the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 401, which is mid-way between the French Broad River and Mt. Pisgah in Buncombe County, NC. According to Jeff Bradley, project manager of Taylor & Murphy Construction Co. Inc., in Asheville, NC, repair work began in early February. Taylor & Murphy is the general contractor that will handle all of the repair work with the exception of the paving, which will be subcontracted to APAC-Atlantic’s Asheville division. Surveyors happened upon the sinkhole while staking out the area for the .7-mi. roadway extension in mid-October. What was then a 5-ft. The Western Gateway Project in Rochester, upstate New York, is an ambitious $85-million effort to rebuild Route I-490 from a western suburban stretch of the Erie Canal to the Genesee River in downtown Rochester. During the job, bridges over the highway will be rebuilt, noise barriers constructed, vehicle monitoring and traffic condition announcement equipment installed and landscaping improved. The project has reached the stage of replacing the approximately 50-year-old eight-span Troup-Howell Bridge, which crosses the Genesee River in the city with a three-member steel arch structure.
