D’Annunzio Leads Way to Holland Tunnel →

Work is under way to reconstruct the 12th Street and 14th Street viaducts, which support the approaches to the Holland Tunnel from Jersey City, NJ. Included in the project’s scope of work, according to Bill Weissman, a project executive of D’Annunzio & Sons Inc., the project’s Clark, NJ-based general contractor, is replacement of the concrete decks; repairs to the substructure, performing seismic retrofits to the viaducts; construction of a new shoulder; widening the structure along the 14th Street Viaduct, which is the westbound approach to the Holland Tunnel; construction of a new retaining wall on the east end of the 12th Street Viaduct; replacement of structural steel stringers; replacement of the bearings and miscellaneous approach road work.  Click for more...

Crews are working to produce smoother roads in the state — approximately 2,200 mi. of them for starters. The flurry of work came after voters passed Amendment 3 in November 2004 giving the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) the green light for major road repairs. AZ Contractor Completes Emergency Repairs on I-40 →

From Construction Equipment Guide... This past spring, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) issued a challenge to local highway contractors. The challenge, in the form of a project, was that a 12-mi. (9.3 km) stretch of I-40, between Sanders, AZ, and the New Mexico state line, was in dire need of repair and ADOT wanted the highway's conditions improved before winter temperatures would render pouring asphalt impossible. ADOT put out an emergency bid on May 26 and Southwest Asphalt Paving, a subsidiary of Fisher Industries located in Tempe, AZ, accepted the challenge by winning the bid on June 17.  Click for more...


Kawasaki Makes Lasting Impression on Barrett Paving →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Kawasaki has made a lasting impression on Barrett Paving Materials’ Litchfield, NY, facility. Barrett Paving owns a year 2000 Kawasaki 95ZIV, a 6.5- yd. (5.9 m) machine and has put a startling number of hours on it. According to Robert Bard, Barrett’s Litchfield plant superintendent, “[We] have had tremendous success with the Kawasaki loader. New Equipment Makes Debut at Highway 74 Site →

An improved piece of iron made its national debut this spring at the U.S. 74 highway project in Robeson County, NC. According to Terry Moore, of R.W. Moore Equipment Company, headquartered in Raleigh, NC, the John Deere 210 rubber-tired excavator was selected for this project because of the large job site and the machine’s ability to set jersey barriers and pipes and dig trenches. “The 210 requires less maintenance, is more efficient and compact, and can do more operations than [our previous machines],” Moore said.  Click for more...

Constant use and weathering led to a call for its replacement. As a result, work began in July 2001 on the $118-million replacement of the Third Avenue Bridge over the Harlem River. Just more than a year after it began, three separate but related reconstruction projects in the 2-year-old city of Miami Gardens, FL, are progressing nicely toward completion. They represent the final phase of a comprehensive plan designed to improve traffic flow and safety along Miami Gardens Drive. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) launched the projects in February 2004. From Construction Equipment Guide... A Dec. 15 rock and mud slide damaged a portion of a North Carolina roadway known for its scenic vistas. Debris toppled onto the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 401, which is mid-way between the French Broad River and Mt. Pisgah in Buncombe County, NC. According to Jeff Bradley, project manager of Taylor & Murphy Construction Co. Inc., in Asheville, NC, repair work began in early February. Taylor & Murphy is the general contractor that will handle all of the repair work with the exception of the paving, which will be subcontracted to APAC-Atlantic’s Asheville division.  Click for more...


Massive Sinkhole Could Delay Tallahassee Road Project →

From Construction Equipment Guide... A massive sinkhole could delay a roadway extension project — and tack a lot more money onto the price tag — for the Tallahassee, FL, Department of Public Works. Surveyors happened upon the sinkhole while staking out the area for the .7-mi. roadway extension in mid-October. What was then a 5-ft. (1.5 m) depression has since grown into a hole approximately 40 ft. (12 m) deep and 70 ft. (21 m) wide, said Public Works Director Gabriel Menendez.  Click for more...
