Following nationwide competition it was announced on July 15, 2008, that a former army site near Chattanooga, Tenn., had been chosen as the location for Volkswagen’s new $1 billion U.S. assembly plant. The facility will manufacture mid-sized vehicles in the United States rather than importing them. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado that hit Suffolk, Va., April 28 had estimated winds of 160 mph. Amazingly, over the tornado’s 10-mi. (16 km) path through the city, there were no fatalities. Reports say approximately 200 injuries occurred in the state of Virginia that day because of the numerous tornados that hit.
