Soon, getting that annual truck chassis inspection should be less of a chore, as Alban Engine Power Systems brings its vehicle inspection system (VIS) right to your door. Six months ago, Baltimore based Alban, purchased a machine from Vehicle Inspection Systems Ltd., an Australia-based company whose North American headquarters is in Louisville, KY. This system has been available Down Under for several years, but according to Alban, this marks the first time a Caterpillar dealer will offer this service to customers in North America. Rea’s I-77 Design-Build Project Unsnarls Traffic in Charlotte →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Interstate 77 that runs through Charlotte, NC, has had major traffic problems for years. Currently, a $71-million highway design-build project is underway to help improve the congestion situation. By widening this 8-mi. (13 km) portion of the highway, the I-77 project will solve many of the troubles this busy interstate encounters on a day-to-day basis. J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers, a division of Somerset Welding and Steel Inc., and a manufacturer of dump bodies and trailers, recently announced the addition of the DynaHauler/LWC to its product line. The lighter weight dump truck body is built with Hardox steel and has no cross members. It allows operators to haul more payload without compromising the structural integrity of the truck. The dump body is installed on an oak cushion and features newly designed formed bottom rails. Crews Work on First Section of WV 9 Replacement Job →

Crews in West Virginia are currently working on the first section of a $110-million project that will replace WV 9 with a new four-lane highway that will run from Charles Town to the Virginia line. The current project runs from U.S. 340 and intersects with Cattail Road, a distance of approximately 1.25 mi. (2 km). The contract includes two separate overpass bridges for 340 and all on/off ramps. Vecellio & Grogan Carves Out Mountainside for U.S. 221 Job →

Department of Transportation engineers decided Cut 4 on a U.S. 221 four-laning project in western North Carolina wasn’t as laid back as they would like, so a Vecellio & Grogan (V&G) construction crew redesigned how it would slice away the mountainside. V&G workers moved farther west at the peak of the ridge. They started a cut that lets a slope descend at a more stable 1.25-to-1 ratio toward the highway 250 ft.  Click for more...

Commercial growth in and around State College, PA, has brought increased traffic and accompanying safety concerns. However, help is at hand with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) I-99 corridor project, now well under way. When completed, the Route 26 portion to the east of State College will connect the Mount Nittany Expressway (U.S. Route 322) to the Bellefonte Bypass (Route 26) and Interstate 80 at the current exit 24. RDO Sees Q4 Loss, Exits Truck Operation →

Construction equipment retailer RDO Equipment Co. said it expects to incur a fiscal fourth-quarter loss from operations of about $6.5 million and a one-time charges of about $7.5 million. The company said the losses reflect a decrease in demand and inventory value for trucks and construction equipment and said it had an agreement to sell its truck operations. Contractor Uses New Paving Technique to Keep on Truckin’ →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Jack’s Truck Stop in Cullman, AL, got a new concrete parking lot recently, but the usual forms, concrete finishers and carpenters were nowhere to be seen. The six-acre parking lot was made using roller compacted concrete, a process which utilizes asphalt paving machines and dump trucks instead of ready-mix trucks and finishing crews.
