Aggregate Equipment Guide
Putzmeister America Inc. introduced its new 42Z truck-mounted concrete boom pump at the World of Concrete trade show in January 2012. The new pump keeps the operator in mind with greater payload capacity, a user-friendly design and increased ease of service, according to the manufacturer.
“The new 42Z pump is an extension of our 50 years of innovation in the design and manufacturing of concrete pumps,” said Jim Bury, director of engineering of Putzmeister America. “With the new generation, we listened to feedback from customers, operators and Putzmeister employees on how we could improve upon the pump’s design and then completely re-thought how each piece could work together seamlessly. We are confident this pump will set new standards in the market.”
The resulting new design makes a gross weight of less than 30 tons (27 t) possible, increasing payload capacity for job site equipment, water and fuel. While the pedestal has remained the same size, several components that were previously located on the deck have been moved, which has allowed for approximately 30-percent more space. The more spacious deck is easier to maneuver for maintenance and service needs, as well as providing an increase in physical space for the payload.
Additionally the life of the pump is increased, while the chance for downtime is reduced due to the pedestal sub-frame’s bolted connections. They allow for flexibility in the frame by adjusting to torsion from the force of the pump.
Another significant change in the design of the new 42Z pump is the increased parts commonality between components of the pipe system and an improved pipe layout. In the new design, only two different types of elbows — 45- and 90-degree — are used, as compared with 30-60-90-degree elbows in the previous model. The turret pipe has gone from having two bends, to only one. Both the new 45-degree elbow and the simplified turret elbow layout offer improved wear, so elbows need to be rotated or changed less frequently, according to the manufacturer.
Contributing to the pump’s enhanced usability is the new ergonic graphic display, which features wireless computer technology and a high resolution, color screen. Putzmeister ergonic technology is a main control system that increases the convenience, performance and overall ease-of-use by allowing the operator to set parameters that control the boom, pump and a variety of other functions.
Overall, the lifetime cost of the new unit is reduced because there are more maintenance-free parts and less variance between types of parts.
